Assignment 1 - Making a Shot List

Princess Bride Sword Fighting Scene
It is extremely important to create a shot list. Without one, no one would know what you have to film next and if you were sick on the job, filming would come to a grinding halt. Luckily for us, we will never have this problem because we have these wonderful inventions – Shot lists.

A shot list is a detailed list of all of the shots, in sequence, that you plan on using in your film. It is also filled with important things such as location and the duration of the shot making it extremely easy for anyone to come and help (and this is what we are striving for). To ensure that everyone understands a shot list we will be making one today. Please go to this link  and watch this clip. Please use this document to complete your work.

After you have watched the clip, you will be required to go back now and, from the beginning, list all of the shots used in this scene.

Please post your completed work, via Google Drive to your blog. Please post this assignment in your AV Preproduction page and title it "Making a Shot List."

Assignment 2 - Looking at Genre

What are the key shots that are stylistic to that Genre?

Research & Define Genre... google the word to get ideas.

Find a YouTube clip and define its genre... be able to rationalize your stance.  Talk about life style shots.  What are they?  What is the difference between horror shots & action shots?  What kind of lighting is used?  What is the timing of the shots in seconds or minutes or hours?

Lifestyle shot - A lifestyle shot is a shot that essentially shows the lifestyle of the individual(s) being filmed. They are not shot on a set but take place in a natural setting.

Lighting - I understand that you do not know the types of lighting used in film. That being said I do know that you are able to tell the difference between a brightly lit set and a low key light.

Please choose two genres and type up a definition and provide an example.

What I am looking for:

Genre: Action Sport/Independent

Online Videos that provide either insight or showcase talent regarding a certain action sport (skiing, skateboarding, surfing, mountain biking, etc) These are usually formatted as promotional videos for an individual athlete or group of athletes, showing back to back clips synced to music. In order to break up the monotony of the constant stream of “tricks,” these short films often include “lifestyle” shots. These clips are designed to give the viewer some insight into either the life or personality of a certain athlete. Often under 10 minutes, these videos usually consist of mainly tracking shots and fast pans.

This video is a perfect example.

Film Making Techniques

We have touched on a few of these but it is important to review and learn new ones. Please watch this video to gain a better understanding of the film making techniques that are common in the industry.

Assignment 3 - Making the Boring Interesting

We all do things in life that are not exciting, it’s just a part of who we are. Yet, what if we took the time to make them exciting?

You will be with a partner that you have not worked with yet this term. Please pick one of the genres that you have researched amongst the two of you and make a boring task interesting.

Some boring tasks may include:
-       Walking to the bus
-       Brushing your teeth
-       Homework.

Before you begin working on this, it is extremely important to do the legwork. Everyone is required to have a shot list. This is to ensure that everyone is spending as little time disrupting classes as possible. Without your shot list, you will not be given the opportunity to go out and film this assignment. Which will ultimately result in a zero.

Assignment 4 - Writing a Script

Writing a script for a movie is extremely important. It tells us the location, the shots and who says what. Your assignment is to take the movie you have just made and turn it into a script. Please make sure to talk to Ms. Nakamura about proper script writing format if you were not here for the original lesson.

You can find the template of your script here (Taken from Wikipedia)
